Beading choices

In a determined effort to bust some stash, I started another skirt set today. This one's being done on a bare minimum of fabric- the only slightly over 1 metre of the lime green lycra that I'd previously earmarked for something to do with the 5-a-day, except that it didn't really work for that.

I usually count on 1½ metres for a mermaid skirt, so the rear godet on this skirt isn't quite as full as I usually have them, but I think it'll be fine. The accessories will be small though- elbow covers rather than gauntlets!

I got the skirt made this afternoon, as I wanted to try out some different beading ideas, when on the train to Chiswick for Arabesque Nights. My range of beads and sequins were as follows:

Lime beading options

1 - lime beads left over from the 5-a-day project
2 - lime green cup sequins, ditto
3 - white seed beads, slightly pearlescent/irridescent
4 - hologram gold sequins, flat

When I started playing around with these, I soon ditched the lime sequins. They were just too close to the colour of the lycra, and they reminded me too much of the 5-a-day. I also ditched the lime beads, because they looked a bit grubby, next to the lycra. So when I actually started working on the beading, I was just using the white beads and holo-gold sequins.

And now I present to you, some rather terrible phonecam photos of the train beading experiments...

Beading 1
Right to Left
Sequin + 3 beads, diagonal away from the fabric edge
Sequin, 5 beads, sequin
6 bead rope, with a sequin in the middle

Beading 2
5 bead rope with a sequin at the start
6 bead rope with a sequin at the start (just in case that extra bead made a difference)

Beading3
Plain bead rope, no frills!
Sequin + 2 beads, diagonal towards the fabric edge

And then on a whim, I brought the lime beads back into play

Beading 5
Bead rope with 6 white beads, and one lime one in the middle.

This time, the lime beads worked fine, and didn't look dirty, so I suspect it wasn't the fluoro lime lycra that had made them look bad, but the hologram gold sequins.

So I undid everything except for the 2-tone rope, and that's what I'll be working on over the next few days.

I am very conscious that I've now got a stack of skirt sets, and I need a couple of bra & belt sets to go with them. Never fear, they are on the Big Costume Sewing Projects List.

You are so good with your test-drives of techniques. Every costume I have has a bit of beading that looks awful, from before I got into the swing of it. I just can't WAIT to get started! And I can't STAND to unpick! (I figure it's "authentic" to be deliberately imperfect, right?)

Oh me too- I'm the Queen of Instant Gratification!

But, against my will, I've learned to take my time to get it right. I hate unpicking, but I guess I hate it looking wrong more.

i need to start some crafty stuff again too

a question, the beading like here, did you just teach that to yourself by trial and error, copy it from stuff you own, find it online, or did someone teach you?

All of the above!

Some things I kind of knew without needing them to be explained, like the rope-beading, because that was just like the embroidery I used to do when I was a kid.
Some things I'd worked out from seeing on costumes right from my earliest days of wearing bellydance costumes, like the sequin-beads-sequin technique.
Some I picked up from seeing other people's work online (Thank you parasitegirl! And thank you Shushanna, even though you're not reading this!), like the rope with a different bead in the middle.
Some I picked up from the workshop I did with Eman at JoY last time, like the rope with a sequin in the middle.
And some of it is just experimentation to see if things will work and being prepared to undo it if they don't.
