DVD review

I got myself two Pilates dvds, with the aim of using them to supplement the classes I've been taking.

So I opened the first of these, 10 Minute Solutions: Pilates for Beginners. I like the basic concept of this series, that you may not have much time to commit to a full full workout, so you could do just 10 minute chunks. And having watched it, and done some of it (I can't breathe properly right now, I'm coughing like like I'm dying of Consumption, and exercise is not a good thing for me tonight), I think it can work for me in that way. Not because I'm so busy busy busy, but because I'm so lazy lazy lazy.

So yeah, broadly I like this dvd. It's purely matwork, no equipment needed, the instruction is neutral in tone, not RahRahRah. And because of the time limitations, there aren't masses of repetitions of the same move, 8 maximum. Though I guess you can pause and do more if you're that way inclined!

Things I'm a bit meh about:
- there's no warm up segment, you'd have to do your own
- there's a lot of stuff that I don't consider Beginner level, they assume a certain level of knowledge, experience of the movement and body awareness.
- there's also a *ton* of stuff I simply can't do because I'm a big old fattie, with soft tissues that get in the way. Child's Pose, nuh unh, I've got a belly and I've got breasts, and it just doesn't work. I'm going to have to adapt, so it's just as well I've got a reasonable idea of how to do that because I teach dance, and I'm interested in Anatomy & Physiology. Also, I'm a total weakling, and a lot of the exercises require strength from the get-go, which I haz not. I'm hoping to develop some strength with the whole Pilates thing, but right now, some of those moves will also need to be adapted.
- I'm a visual learner, and I like to be able to see what's going on, what I'm aiming for. And this is in no way the dvd's fault, it's entirely how my tv and dvd player are set up, but once I'm lying on the floor, I can't see what's on the screen.

But yes, I do intend to give it several more goes, and see what I can get out of it.

Hey, I think I have that DVD somewhere... er... somewhere... I kind of gave up on the Pilates DVDs when my back got so bad. Hmm.

This is a good review, and you're right, almost no yoga/stretch/pilates etc DVDs give you adaptations for positions you can't reach, whether due to flexibility or general plushness. Makes me crazy.

Feel better soon!
