Poetry Idol

Only barely tangentially dance-related... I was driving home from Shisha Lounge and came upon a radio programme called Poetry Idol. In Abu Dhabi, there is a tv talent show for poets, which has a cash prize equal to just short of one million pounds. That is some serious commitment to The Arts.

Interestingly, there are actually some women entrants, but they get a lot of online trolling and personal abuse. I don't know how widely this programme airs in the Arab world, but there were Emirati entrants, and also Omani and Saudi. I was quite surprised how different their dialect sounds, much more gutteral and sharp, compared to the Egyptian Arabic I'm more familiar with. And when I say familiar with, it's not like I hear much of it that isn't sung! But I suppose I have been in Egypt a few times, and I have watched a fair few Egyptian movies.

It was a fascinating programme. It's on iPlayer, if anyone's interested, and it looks like it's going to be available pretty much permanently (till 2099!):

I hope that my more culturally conscious flisties who would be interested in such things can access it. There's a nice lot of khaligi background music!
