Fun & Games!

Back in September, at the Tutors Pre-Start-of-Term meeting, where they tell you a load of stuff about how much our funding is being cut, and how we need to do EVEN BETTER in our next Ofsted inspection and so on, there was a tiny wee small item about how the week commencing 6th February 2012 was going to be Celebrate The Olympics! week, and tutors were encouraged to use this as a theme for classes in that week.

I filed that little nugget of information away, and when it came to planning my Scheme of Work for this term, I retrieved it, and planned accordingly for this week.

So after going through the choreography and *finishing it* (hooray! and Whoo! I never thought we'd get there!), we held the Bellydance Olympics!

I had five games lined up, but knew that we'd only really have time for three, really. So I got them started on an Egg and Spoon with Arabesques Race. Except I wasn't going to mess about with boiling eggs, and I picked cotton spools as being a suitable alternative (Suzy pointed out that Creme Eggs would have been a good substitution, and I will remember that for next time!). I only had four sets of spoons & cotton spools, so we had to have heats, and then a final. Wow, I never knew how competitive some of those girls could be! The winner was thrilled with the rosette that I presented to her (it was a giftwrap decorative bow, but it was silver and pink and shiny), having never before won any kind of reward for sporting prowess! And because I didn't want there to be any losers, there were chocolates all round for everyone.

We went on to the Step Push While Balancing Something On Your Head Race. I'd decided on DVD cases, being reasonably light, but challengingly shiny/slippery. The end result was a photo-finish, with Christine just pipping Jo to the post! Another gratefully received rosette, and more chocolates for everyone. I think I'm onto something here- I may have to contact the 2012 Olympic Committee and suggest that they give everyone chocolates at the Games- it means everyone's happier all round, even when they didn't win.

And I wanted a non-competitive game for the last one, so I'd settled on an adapted Wink Murder Relay. We were dancing in a circle, and I started off as leader. The idea was that I should wink unobtrusively at someone, to make them the new leader, that they would then change the move, and when people had all caught up, wink at someone else so that they could become leader, etc, etc, etc... It did degenerate somewhat, into fits of giggles and increasingly obvious winking, but hey, everyone was dancing and, just as importantly, having a good time with it!

Anyway, at the end of it all, I handed out Chocolate Money Gold Medals to everyone, Hooray for the Olympics, and Hooray for Fun & Games!

That is such a fun idea!!! I may have to steal it for my classes, especially the daytime senior ones since Parks and Rec is square in the middle of Senior Games ( used to be Senior Olympics but they changed the name last year).

I love this idea! AND if you use creme eggs in the race it means EVERYBODY GETS CHOCOLATE.
