I had a bit of personal disappointment today, and desperately needed to do something creative and positive, and I was sick to the back teeth of pink! So I laid aside the current sewing project, and did something different that I could get done quickly.

I'd been holding onto a really old pair of leggings that I've mended as often as I could, but had decided I really couldn't mend *again*. The reason I was holding onto them is that I wanted to make a pattern out of them, because they are the most comfy and well-fitting leggings I've owned in years.

So tonight was the night... I carefully cut the legs apart and spread one piece out onto newspaper, and drew around it, thusly:

A pattern for leggings and future trouser based costuming

The reason these leggings are such a nice fit, is that there is plenty of room in the bootay, as you may be able to spot.

I sewed the front & back crotch seams first, then the inside leg seam, and finally put in an elastic waistband, and Bob's your uncle, Fanny's your aunt...

In the originals, each leg is made of two pieces, a narrower front and a wider back. I've made it into one piece, but I don't think it detracts from the fit. They are super-comfy!

I'm quite pleased with myself, because this fabric (a burgundy microfibre lycra, very soft to the touch) has been in my stash for quite a while, and I'd originally intended it to become a pair of leggings. So yay for achieving a long term goal!

I'm also pleased with myself, because since a couple of days ago, I'd been thinking that instead of making a skirt set out of the purple lycra bits, I'd quite like to have a go at making a trousers/pants set. I'd been uncertain about the whole "making trousers" thing, because I've not tried them before, but now I feel a bit more confident that I can do this. I just need to make the leggings pattern longer and looser from the knee down.

I'm just wondering now, what have I got in the stash that I can use for more leggings?

And I am *totally* wearing these leggings to class tomorrow!

ETA- I just realised- I can use this pattern to make bike shorts for wearing under the more risqué costumes!

WooHa you are great at sewing! If we lived anywhere near each other I would so hire you to do some simple costuming for me.

You MADE those? They are fantastic!

And YES to a shorts pattern!

How did you get the crotch to sit right? I made pants years ago, and they look good provided a fringed crotch-covering belt is being worn, which is one of the reasons I NEVER WEAR THEM; they sit weirdly at the crotch.

Lycra! And also having a well-fitting pair of leggings on which to base the pattern. I don't know the secret. All I know is that this works for me.

I'm also looking at the last bits of luminous pink lycra and thinking "Raqia leggings!!!" but I know that way madness lies!
