The 5-a-day bra

I can't do much more on the dress until I've seen how it works with the bra. So today it was time to get cracking on the bra.

I decided last night that I'd go for a slightly different ribcage strap arrangement for the bra than I usually do. So instead of one big substantial back strap made of double-layer thick interfacing, which is the technique I've employed in all my bras to date, I'm going for two narrow straps, made of Petersham/grosgrain. This is to test how this system works, in a context where it really doesn't matter, because the straps are going to be covered by the dress. If it works, I could use it as a proper design element, on some later project.

I bought the Petersham this afternoon. It's good & thick, and when doubled up, it is practically indestructible. I've tested how it works with the apple print lycra, and I'm adding a layer of wadding to the straps to make them a bit plumper before covering them. It also limits the likelihood of the black weave in the Petersham showing through. As you can see from the photo, the white of the ribbon is rather blighted, but actually, it doesn't show through all that much, the wadding will mask it, and in any case, it will be under the dress- I don't need to worry about such minor details!

So the ribcage straps are all ready.

The job for tonight is the construction of the front of the bra.

The bra front has been made up. The cups were taken apart and put back together again in a more substantial and secure manner. It's not pretty right now, but I'm hoping that once it's covered, it will look more the part!
