Shimmy in the City - Competition

I enjoyed the competition much more than I was expecting to. It helped enormously that it was considerably better organised than last year. Last year there was ONE person doing the backstage ASM-ing, the announcing and the music tech-ing. This year, three different people- much smoother and much less hanging around waiting for people to be ready, waiting for music to play on incompatible music systems. Much better.

Apart from those logistical issues, there was an interesting variety of dancers taking part in the competition. Sure there was still a bunch of "competition dancers", but there were also more Individuals, dancers who gave more of a sense of their own personalities.

Of course, I was particularly interested in evil_spice, who was dancing in the solo competition, and also as part of the Peacock Project in the group competition, along with wooglethealien. I was rooting for them both. E_S did a fab Oriental piece, and got into the final. She then proceeded to do a brilliant Sha'abi piece, which I felt sure ought to have got her a Place.

But she was robbed! Despite Sha'abi being allowed last year as a Folklore style in the Final, this year, it wasn't. And nobody had thought fit to tell the competitors. I thought this was grossly unfair, and it's left a rather unpleasant taste in my mouth over this competition.

But APART from all that, it was lovely to hang out with a bunch of UK flisties, to gossip and chat and catch up and update. Looking forward to more of that tomorrow!

The folklore round *was* the final. They announced the winners at the haflah, but I didn't stay for that, so I don't know who won. It will be all over FB tomorrow, I'm sure!

Yes, it was VERY unfair. I don't know if it was a Judges decision, or an Organisers decision, but it sucked, bigtime.

Sounds more than a bit unfair if there was no advanced warning that Sha'abi wouldn't be considered folklore style this year. I hope the organisers get theri arses handed to them over that one. You don't want to consider it folklore, fine, but tell the competitors ahead of time.

Yup, their arses most definitely require handing to them on a plate.

The results were

1) bland russian girl who did the made up khaleegy
2) Other khaleegy girl (dutch?) who had a nice smiley face
3) Saiidi russian girl

but who knows what would have happened if the 3 shaabi/baladi girls would have been in contention. 1st place seems to have gone to the ususal suspect but i think the other 2 places were up for grabs.

The other khaligi girl was French. I had a national interest in her progress!

I thought she had a nice face and personality and also she looks like a friend of mine which helped.
