Hipnotic FB hmmm

I'm wondering if I'm the "member of the Bellydance Police" that someone was complaining about on the Hipnotic FB group? I hate those nameless accusations- they always make me feel guilty, whether I am or not.

I try to be nice. I watch politely and I applaud, even when an act is not to my particular taste. I support student dancers. I never say a student is rubbish, although it may be the case that their teacher has not adequately taught/prepared them for performance.

But sometimes, when faced with terrible dancing from a so-called professional, I can't help what my face is doing.

I would also point out that the key word in the phrase "Bellydance Police" is "Bellydance".

Oh so that's what that was all about. Might not be you as I doubt you voiced these loudly in public?

Sometimes, shit is just shit, not a special snowflake.

I've no idea what it was all about- I'm just feeling general background level guilt!

My teacher advised me recently that I should think of watching bad bellydance performances as a chance to practice my Acting.

I think Meryl Streep, Dame Judi Dench and Gwynneth Paltrow would all have difficulty keeping the "Nice" face on with some acts!

Well, at least channel Maggie Smith! She does "repressive disapproving" so well!

If you Google "Hipnotic Review" then your LJ post does come up - and there were a couple of attendees who would have probably done just that, Goggled to see if there was a review.

I don't mind that. If I post openly then I'm prepared to stand up for my views. I have done so before now.

I do hate it when people make those non-specific accusations.

I've never found your reviews of dance shows to be catty, just statements of personal opinon and preference. Not once have you come across to me as catty or being "bellydance police", just someone with a strong preference for good dancing.

Thank you! I do try to make it clear that my personal taste colours my reviews. But I do have some fairly *ahem* "robust" opinions, and sometimes my prejudices end up showing!

Hipnotic Review
I thought your review of the show was great. You weren't rude or mean... just stated facts and observations you made at the show. I'm sure many others were thinking the same things as you. Though I enjoy watching dance performances of all genres, it also bothers me when I see groups or individuals who don't incorporate much if any actual bellydance into their routines at a bellydance show. I also get frustrated seeing unprepared professionals who aren't quite there yet skill level wise to be teachers. This was a professional show, you had a right to be critical in the way that you were. It wasn't like you were bashing a bunch of utter beginners at a hafla. Thank you again, for your honest review.

Re: Hipnotic Review
Hi Caitlin, thanks for posting.

I'm glad you think I wasn't mean or rude in my review! As I've said above, I just get a generalised feeling of guilt, when someone accuses someone nameless of being the BD Police. I know I have those tendencies!

Strictly speaking, Hipnotic is a showcase, rather than a "professional show", it includes student performers (solo and troupe), more experienced dancers, all the way up to pro level. It's a real mix.
