Video night- always fun

We had the pre-Christmas last-class-of-term video night tonight. I've still got classes tomorrow night for the Guildford girls, but this was the last one for the Farnham classes.

I had decided to go by historical order, starting in the 50s. I made them watch bits of Afrita Hanem, because we'll be working on Kahramana next term, and because it's so much fun to watch! I made them watch the proper bellydancing bits like Kahramana itself, and the birdcage number, but also we watched the bit *after* the birdcage dance, where Farid & Samia go to the Underworld! It's a HOOT! Then we watched some Tahia (I would have made them watch Naima, but haven't got her on dvd, only video) and compared and contrasted her style with Samia's. Then onto the some Nagua Fouad, and a bit of Suad Hosni, being *adorably* 60s, and some Suhair Zaki (who is my favourite dancer EVAH). I didn't have any 70s stuff available on dvd so we had to skip straight through to the 80s, and some more Nagua, and then Fifi at the Sheraton, where she's wearing the gorgeous sunshine yellow and she's got the Biggest Hair you can imagine (and I can imagine some pretty damn big hair). Then we moved on to the present day, and what the Americans get up to, with a bit of Aziza because she's so adorable, and Ansuya, being very American Cabaret style, then a bit of tribal fusion, just so they could see how you can dance if you have no internal organs whatsoever!

Having done the historical tour, I felt I could go back to some proper Egyptian again, with Yasmina. And then finally, we watched the video of the performance at Hipnotic, which turned out very well, and although almost everybody had said "oh, I went wrong on that bit...", I couldn't see much going wrong, although admittedly, I've only just watched it the once and I possibly had rose-tinted contact lenses in. But seriously, it's turned out brilliantly, and we'll have to find other opportunities to perform it.

I did henna for those that wanted it. One student insisted on giving me a fiver for it, to donate to a charitable cause. I was going to make it Just Because, but it turns out they aren't accepting paypal donations, and I can't be bothered to mess about with a cheque for £5, so it will go to Breast Cancer Care instead, after all. The henna came from my usual source, but this time it was a bit stringy, or gluey, really hard to control. But people were happy.

So all in all, an enjoyable evening all round.

For some reason I always thought Fifi was your favorite EVAH!

Fifi is a big favourite, but Suhair is my extra-special forever love.

What made it even better was the home-made baklava that one of my students brought along.
